Independent Slitters Limited operates an Integrated Management System for activities relating to Quality, Environment & Health & Safety, (a QuEnSH approach).

The Health & Safety aspects of the system have been developed based on the principals outlined in the standard OHSAS 18001 and are applicable internally, but also provides a mechanism assisting others, such as suppliers in providing products and services that are safe, minimizing the risk to employees, visitors and to the general public.

The company’s QuEnSH system allows the health and safety management system to interact with the international standards EN9001 & EN14001 for Quality and Environmental Management respectively. It provides a framework for the development and implementation of common policies, procedures & controls that are applicable in all three areas of the business.

The management system provides methods for:

1.Compiling a register and record of all applicable legislation such as the Health & Safety at Work Act, together with controls that ensure that the information is updated when changes occur.

2.Carrying out risk assessments of the work place including, machinery, equipment & associated processes.

3.The planning & implementation of controls to minimize the risk from hazards that have been identified.

4.Reviewing risk assessments and associated controls.

5.Meetings with employee representatives and the management of Independent Slitters Limited, to discuss Health & Safety arrangements and developments.

6.Suitably qualified persons to provide first aid assistance.

7.Methods for evacuating buildings in the event of an emergency, such as fire.

8. Suitable training of employees, enabling them to operate in a safe and effective manner and to understand their responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act, including other applicable legislation and codes of practice.

9.The setting of objectives and targets for health and safety improvement.

10.Planning and monitoring work progress associated with Health & Safety Improvements and to ensure it is timely completion, commensurate with the level of risk involved.

11.Management reviews to determine the continued suitability of the system and to check whether or not objectives and targets are being achieved.


The company plans & carries out scheduled audits to determine whether documented Health & Safety arrangements are in line with actual operation and practice.

 Any variations reported are subject the company’s corrective and preventive action procedures that aim to achieve continual improvement in Health & Safety and operational performance.

The objective of the company’s integrated management system is to provide a cost effective method of managing Health and safety and to provide a safe working environment for all of its employees, contractors and visitors.

To achieve this, the system and its operation have the full support and commitment of the management team.
